Nail Biting Disorder

Nail biting disorder or onychophagia (ah-nih-kah-fuh-juh) is the biting of the nails, leading to damage to the nail bed and cuticles. It is the most common BFRB and affects approximately 20% of the population. Severe nail biting can result in permanent damage to nail beds and cuticles, or bacterial infections.

Nail Picking Disorder

Nail picking disorder or onychotillomania (on-y-cho-til-lo-ma-ni-a) is the repeated picking or tearing of the nails. This can lead to damaging the nails, cuticles and nail bed. Many people with onychophagia also have onychotillomania.
